Riley spends her whole story refusing to start the day. Jessee B keeps her inside an A frame in the hills above Los Angeles, all bare beams and glass pitched at an angle, where a white cotton slip lasts about as long as the walk to the window. The Times gets a proper read with her knees drawn up on a gray wool chair, the duvet becomes an overcoat she wears standing at the glass, and a pair of pink socks outlasts everything else she had on. Unfiltered.

Philine's story runs the other way, from full sun to the last of it. ArtofLiving starts her on a shelf of wind scoured granite above a cove, pale blue strings and a squint against the glare, then walks her down to a harbor where sailboat masts stand in a row and the sun sinks behind the headland at her back. Bronzed, composed, and the last thing on the beach still glowing.
